My first and most passionate work is Wittenberg, a prequel to Shakespeare's Hamlet. Since then I have developed screenplays in various genres and have helped many screenwriters take their scripts to the next level. Will you be next?

The Use of Reveals

So you’re crafting a story, trying to figure out what will take it to “the next level.”  Assuming you have great characters, an engaging plot, a resonating theme, and wide audience appeal, then you may dig deep into the toolbox and pull out a great reveal.

You’ve all heard Hitchcock’s teaching on suspense: a bomb under the table as two people eat.  The bomb explodes. That’s surprise. If we reveal to the audience the bomb is there, that creates suspense as we wait for the characters to catch up.

The Master

I spent 3 days as an extra in PT Anderson's latest, The Master.   The experience began after a 1950s haircut, wardrobe in vintage wool suit, and two days in front of massive lights in 102 degree weather in a room full of smokers.  PT trying to get the atmosphere right.  At one point I thought I fainted but it was just the delirium.

But on the third day, they asked if anyone knew how to swing dance...

Want to be creative?  Learn to fill your toy box.

You can read all the screenwriting books there are (and I've read a ton) about how stories are constructed, about the 3 act structure, theming, character stuff, throughlines...

But you'll end up with more derivative stuff without digging into your psyche and finding what matters to you, without periodically looking at the world from a whimsical slant, and without stretching your mind with a little day dreaming, now and again.
